The Root Causes of Gout

Risk Factors

A number of risk factors are related to the development of hyperuricemia and gout, some of which you can control and others which you can't:

Some risk factors may be managed, including obesity, a high-purine diet, and drinking alcohol. Although none of these factors alone may cause hyperuricemia, each may contribute to the problem. When coupled with a reduced ability of the kidneys to eliminate uric acid, the condition called hyperuricemia can develop—potentially leading to gout.

For some people, gout can be controlled by finding and correcting the cause of hyperuricemia. However, when this is unsuccessful, medications are available to help lower uric acid levels.
